The Hate Record documents organized hate online. What is spreading, where it is spreading, and what the platforms did about it once they knew.

Most of what we report never crosses into a crime. It is the steady stream of hostility in comment sections, Facebook groups, Substack newsletters and forums: the pile-ons, the coded language, the same accounts showing up thread after thread. Police do not track it because it is not their job. We do, because it is the ground the serious threats grow out of.

Who we are

The Hate Record is the openly declared reporting arm of ANIA (Advanced National Intelligence Agency), a privately held, independent intelligence firm. ANIA is not a government agency and does not act under government authority. Our reporting is based on ANIA's monitoring of public online activity, and we say so every time.

Anything ANIA finds that looks like a real threat goes to law enforcement first. It does not go into a story.

What we publish

  • The Record: what ANIA's monitoring found, at the level of groups, pages and patterns.

  • The Response: what platforms, companies and officials did once they were told, and how fast.

  • How We Know: the method behind the findings, so you can check our work.

Who we name

Private individuals are not named. When one account matters to the story, it appears as Person A, Person B and so on, consistently through the piece.

We do name people who have stepped into a public role: candidates and officeholders, and anyone who publicly presents themselves as a community organizer, activist, group admin or spokesperson. We keep a record of where they described themselves that way. Platforms and companies are always named.

Anyone we name gets the chance to respond before publication.
