These are the rules every Hate Record story follows. If a story breaks one, that is a correction, and we will publish it.

What we collect

Public posts only. We read; we never post, reply, join private groups under false pretenses or interact with the people we track.

Every item is captured with its link, date and time, and preserved the way digital evidence should be, following the Berkeley Protocol on digital open-source investigations. Sources are graded for reliability and credibility before anything is reported.

What we do not keep

We do not keep files on people for their speech, politics or religion alone. A record on a private person opens only when hostile speech comes with something more: an address or photo of a home, a named target, a call to action, a threat, or the same behavior repeated across groups. Those files are reviewed every 90 days and closed after 12 months without new activity.

Who we name

Private individuals are never named. They appear as Person A, Person B and so on. Screenshots are cropped or blurred to hide personal details, homes, license plates and children.

Named: candidates and officeholders, and people who publicly present themselves as community organizers, activists, group admins or spokespeople. We keep the record of where they said so.

Always named: the platforms, companies and institutions involved.

Police come first

If something we find looks like a real threat to a person or a place, it goes to law enforcement before it goes anywhere else. We do not publish material in a way that would interfere with a police response.

Right of reply

Anyone named, and every platform involved, is contacted before publication. Their response runs in the story, or we say they declined or did not answer.

Corrections

Mistakes get fixed in the story with a dated note at the bottom saying what changed. Send corrections to [email protected] or call 505 932 9060.

Independence

The Hate Record is published by ANIA, a privately held, independent intelligence firm. ANIA is not a government agency and does not act under government authority. No advertiser, platform or outside group reviews our stories before they run.
